Carovigno

Italian comune

Carovigno is a town in the south of Italy. It lies in the "heel" of Italy, in a part of Upper Salento known for its fine olive oils. The city is home to about 17,000 people (2017). Administratively, Carovigno belongs to the province of Brindisi, in the Apulia region.

It is 6 km from the Adriatic Sea (in the hamlet of Torre Santa Sabina) and 12 km from the Natural and Marine Reserve of Torre Guaceto. It is 7 km from Ostuni and 34 km from Brindisi.

By train

The closest station is that of Carovigno, 3.5 km north of the town, towards Torre Santa Sabina. Inaugurated in 1865, it is part of the Adriatic Railway.

By bus

Carovigno is served by the public service Stp Brindisi. Furthermore, in the month of August, the Carovigno-Torre Santa Sabina-Specchiolla section is free during the evening.

Castello Dentice di Frasso

Parts of the old town are intact.

  • Among the main sights is the 15th century Castello Dentice di Frasso, which dominates the old town. It was built in the 14th-15th century.
  • Castle of Serranova
  • Santa Sabina Tower and Guaceto Tower, two coastal watchtowers built in the 16th century
  • Home of the renowned Cavaliere della Repubblica Teodosio Iaia, who is also the author of the book "Vi racconto una storia"

  • Trophy of the two towers. End of July. The towers in question are the hamlets of Torre Santa Sabina and Torre Guaceto.

  • Santa Maria Goretti (Serranova). First weekend of August.
  • Medieval Historical Parade. Second week of August. With dinner and exhibition of the flag wavers.
  • Patronal feasts. 17-18 August. In honour of the Madonna dell'Uragano.
  • Santa Sabina (Torre Santa Sabina). Second last Sunday of August.
  • End of summer party (Sanctuary of Belvedere). Second Sunday of September.
  • Madonna della Conella (Cunedda in the Carovignese dialect) (Conella district). Second weekend of October.
