St. Francis of Assisi Church in Diu, DNDD, India, is a church built in the year 1593, at the time of Governor Pero de Naya.[1][2] It was the first church to be built by the Portuguese on Diu Island.[3] Built on the southern part of the island, it overlooks the Arabian Sea. It was the friary of the Franciscan order. The church is still in use, though only occasionally.
Hospital era
Following the collapse of the Church of St. John of God in 1832, the cloister was converted into a hospital and used for about 184 years.[1]
Architecture
The church is situated near St. Paul's Church and St. Thomas Church and stands on top of a 20-step staircase.[1]
