LG Chromebase 22" Teardown

Background Information

Also known as the LG Chromebase 22CV241, the LG Chromebase 22" is an education-focused device that was released in May of 2014. The device is powered by an Intel Celeron 2955U processor with a base clock speed of 1.4 GHz and comes with 16 GB of internal storage, and ships with either 2 GB or 4 GB of RAM.

Continued Usefulness

This device has been discontinued by LG and no longer receives security updates or feature patches from Google. While the device can be used without these updates it means that the user has to accept the risk of using the device without the latest security.

The Chromebase features a decent 1920x1080 IPS screen and can be used as an HDMI monitor. Simply plug any HDMI source into the port on the rear and press the "Chrome" button to switch it to monitor mode. This feature continues to function even if the BIOS is flashed and the device is running an alternate operating system.

It is recommended that you extend the life of your Chromebase by building ChromiumOS from the source or flashing the BIOS and installing a supported Linux OS like Debian 12. The Chromebase uses a write protect screw for the BIOS - the removal procedure is documented in the teardown linked above. The only user-upgradeable component inside is the RAM, which can be expanded to 8 GB using a commonly-available 1.35V SO-DIMM module.
