Rutland is England's smallest ancient county, having been reinstated to Unitary Authority status on 1 April 1997. The county has two historic market towns, Oakham and Uppingham, and numerous villages in a rolling, rural landscape. It also has a large reservoir in the middle of the county, and is popular for boating.

Trains travelling on the line between Leicester and Peterborough stop at Rutland's one and only functioning railway station, at Oakham.
