Mayfield is a small rural village in East Sussex, in the South East of England.

Understand

St Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury (959-988) built a wooden church in Mayfield. The village is mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

There are bus services operated by Stagecoach from Mayfield High Street to Heathfield and Tunbridge Wells. During the day, these run half-hourly, but do not run late into the evening.

  • 🌍 Argos Hill Mill. windmill built in 1835
  • 🌍 St Dunstan's Church. Founded in 960 CE by St Dunstan. A stone church was built in the12th century by the Normans, but was destroyed by fire in1389, with only the tower surviving, and what you see today is mainly 17th century.

Built in 1575 and once occupied by Sir Thomas Gresham, the Middle House has four bedrooms, bar food and an à la carte restaurant (mains from £20). There is also a beer garden, and accommodation. The owners have opened a delicatessen in the High Street selling bread, meat, cheese and vegetables.
