Combarro

Combarro is a village in Galicia in northwest Spain. It's on the north shore of the Ría de Pontevedra, a relaxing place with a population of 1250 in 2023.

Get in

Highway PO-308 twists and turns along the coast.

Monbus runs hourly from Pontevedra towards O Grove making multiple stops. You'll need to ask where to get off or use a phone map to check your distance to destination.

  • Village centre is attractive. The church of San Bernando is modern.
  • 🌍 Hórreos are scattered along the shore near the marina, with a cluster 500 m north. They're storage for grain, sometimes of wood but here of stone, raised on stilts to keep out rats and topped with crosses to ward off supernatural vermin.
  • 🌍 Illa da Tambo seen out in the bay was for years off-limits as a navy base but can now be visited by Mar de Ons boat trips from Combarro. It has military ruins, an old chapel and a lazaretto or isolation hospital.

  • Leisure craft sail from the marina.
  • Golf: Meis golf course is in the hills to the north, reached via the village of Silván.

Buy

Froiz is the main supermarket, on the main road 200 m north of the marina at Av da Cruz 4. It's open M-Sa 09:00-21:30.

Eat

Eating places are along the old town waterfront north of the marina. They include Evoca, Tinta Negra, A Tres Nudos, Arroyo, O Poleiro, Torna, Alvariñas, Leucoiña, Rustico, O Bocoi, Entrepedras, O Peirao and Bar Pedramar.

Drink

  • Galician wine (for instance Albariño) is white and crisp like Portuguese.
  • Aguardiente - "fire water" - is similar to marc or grappa, distilled from grape skins after the crushings are run off for wine.
