Strömstad

Strömstad is a city in Bohuslän on the west coast of Sweden, close to the Norwegian border. While home only to 6,000 people, it is for historical reasons often referred to as a city. It is a fishing town and a popular holiday destination. In the fish shops along the quayside you can eat fresh shrimp and fish. In the area, there are a number of prehistoric monuments, such as stone rings, stone ships, rock carvings and burial mounds.

By bus

Timeekspressen has 6 daily departures from Oslo. They return on top of the hour, every two hours between 8 and 16. Swebusexpress buses also stops here on their Göteborg–Oslo route.

By train

There are about 4–5 daily departures from Göteborg by Västtrafik. In the summer SJ runs an X2000 express train from Stockholm twice a day.

By ferry

There are several ferry's every day across the outflow of the Oslo fjord from Sandefjord in Norway with a Color line ferry. The previous connection from Langesund was discontinued in 2008.

By plane

The nearest airports are:

  • Oslo Gardermoen, Norway. Around 170 km distance. Major international airport.
  • Trollhättan Vänersborg, Sweden. Around 120 km distance. Small domestic airport.
  • Göteborg Landvetter, Sweden. Around 180 km distance. Medium size international airport.

Strömstad

The inner city is small, so walking is recommended. Västtrafik organises local buses.

See

  • 🌍 Blomsholm. An archaeological site with remnants from the Stone Age, the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. Famous for megalithic monuments including stone circles and stone ships. 
  • 🌍 Koster Islands. Boats depart at up to 16 times a day in the high season, right next to the Tourist Information Centre (travel time about 1 hour). The islands are ideal for a trip of one to several days. The trips are car-free. Bicycles can be used on Sydkoster and on a few main routes on Nordkoster, which for the most part is a nature reserve. The reserve is a good destinations for a day trip; it can be circumnavigated by a walk of about 1.5–2 hours pure walking time. On Sydkoster, the Natureum at Ekenäs brygga is a good destination. There are restaurants on both islands, but only on Sydkoster a supermarket (in the middle of the island; Su closed). Accommodation must be booked in advance, also the campsite on Nordkoster.
