Silchar (Bengali: শিলচর Śilcar SHIHL-chawr, Assamese: শিলচৰ Śilcar xihl-sawr) is the largest city of the Barak Valley region of Assam, India.
Bengali and Manipuri (Meitei) are the official languages of Silchar and the rest of the Barak Valley. However, as it is in the state of Assam, Assamese is the state official language that is used in state government offices. In addition, most well-educated locals will also be able to speak Hindi and English.
Bus service is available from Guwahati, Shillong (9 hrs), Agartala, Imphal, Aizawl.
Buses arrive/depart from ISBT (bus terminal about 5km west of city centre) or Capital Point (central street with several ticket counters).
For trains one have to come to Lumding from Guwahati by BG trains and then MG train to Silchar, it take more or less 12 hours. Alternatively, it is also possible to travel by the daily 05568 Bairabi - Silchar Passenger Special from Bairabi in Kolasib district of Mizoram to Silchar in about 3 hours and 30 minutes.
