Schulenburg

Schulenburg is a city in Fayette County in the Post Oak Savannah region of Texas. It bills itself as halfway to everywhere, since it's halfway between Houston and San Antonio on I-10 and halfway from Austin to Victoria north-south.

The sign out front is written in crooked hillbilly script with the sub-title, "COME AS U R AND BRING MA N' PA!" but on a nearby billboard is a content-looking Bavarian with liederhosen and a bottlebrush mustache. Inside is a buffet with fried chicken, barbecued ribs, sauerbraten and various wurst; the menu also has local German favorites alongside catfish and hushpuppies. A nice general store with jerky by the pound and German pastries rounds out the fun. $8.
