Sant Esteve d'en Bas

Sant Esteve d'en Bas is in Catalonia, and is a stage in the Catalan Way of St. James. Sant Esteve d'en Bas is the capital town of the Vall d'en Bas, in La Garrotxa, near Olot. Its twelfth century church stands out.

Its inhabitants are called letissons, and they celebrate their major festival on the third Sunday of September, with the dance of the wise donkey or Saint Isidre, and the dance of the giants.

• 🌍 Sant Esteve d'en Bas church. This church is located under the Puigsacalm cliffs. The original construction is of the first Romanesque, made with more rudimentary materials that were replaced by the preserved Romanesque remains and which we can date to the twelfth century. Among these remains, the elements described here should be highlighted in order of priority. Bernat Tallaferro, in 1117, cedes the site of Ullo (he mentions the church) to the bishopric. The deed of consecration dates from 1119. The earthquakes of 1427 and 1428 shook the church and in 1432 some arches were rebuilt. During the 18th century it was reformed again and acquired a basilica presence to the detriment of the Romanesque. Of the twelfth century building, only the apse is preserved, restored in 1947. Inside the church is kept a sculptural ensemble representing the crucifixion. This relief is of great archaism and hieratism. (updated Nov 2023)
