Stockholm/Söderort

Söderort [ˈsøːdərˈuʈ] refers to the part of Stockholm municipality that lies south of Södermalm (which covers the Globe Arena, Hammarby Sjöstad, and Liljeholmen). The term Söderort sometimes refers to all southern suburbs, including Haninge, Huddinge, Botkyrka and others; these are however covered in the Södertörn article. The Woodland Cemetery, Skogskyrkogården, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the most interesting places in Söderort.

Most of the area consists of apartment row houses 2-5 floors tall, built up during the mid-20th century together with the subway.

Get in

The area is well served by public transport. See Stockholm#Public transport. Some local trains call at Älvsjö station. As in the rest of Stockholm, location is usually described with a T and the name of the nearest subway station, as in (T Gullmarsplan).

  • 🌍 Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery) (T Skogskyrkogården), ☏ + 46 8 508 317 30. A UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its architecture. The two architects Gunnar Asplund (who later also would design the Stockholm Public Library) and Sigurd Lewerentz were 30 years old when they won the architecture competition in 1915. All chapels and other main buildings are designed by Asplund, with the exception of the Chapel of Resurrection, designed by Lewerentz, the landscape architect. The site also features works of art by famous Swedish artists such as Sven Erixson, Carl Milles and Otto Sköld. With some 100,000 graves spanning 102 hectares, Skogskyrkogården is the second largest cemetery in Sweden. The film star Greta Garbo is one of several notables buried there. In addition to the large Christian Protestant section, there are also Orthodox, Catholic, Jewish and Muslim sections. Around All Saints' Day, the cemetery is full of candles. The Swedish rock band Entombed made a photo session for their album Left Hand Path at the cemetery. Free entrance. Public guided tours in English every Sunday at 10:30 June—September, costs 100 kr.   • 🌍 Snösätra. A decommissioned industrial area known for its street art.

  • 🌍 Stockholm International Fairs. Stockholmsmässan, in Älvsjö, an exhibition centre for business and hobby events, with its own commuter train station. 
  • 🌍 Gubbängens IP (T Gubbängen). A stadium for a motorcycle speedway. 
  • 🌍 Highvalley Skateworld (Högdalens Skatepark) (T Högdalen). A skateboard park, to be expanded. (updated Aug 2015)
  • 🌍 Vinterviken. A popular swimming/sunbathing area close to the old Nobel dynamite factories, old explosion test caves can be seen when walking around the seaside area. The old factory building is a café and museum. Good place to have a good time when the sun is making the mountion rock hot, bring something to sit on, otherwise its too hot to sit on the bare rock. Beware that it may be packed in summertime during warm evenings due to the beautiful sunset view. Closest metro is Axelsberg, walk north-east towards the water. Fun fact: Alfred Nobel was forced out of Vinterviken by the city council, due to several fatal accidents related to explosive experiments. 
  • 🌍 Ågesta Naturistbad. Stockholm's only official nudist beach. 
  • 🌍 Nackareservatet. A natural reserve forest in Nacka Municipality. 
  • 🌍 Hellasgården. In Nacka, a centre for sports and adventure, including football golf, mountainbiking, canoeing, ice swimming and yoga. 
  • 🌍 Nytorps gärde. A park with rock carvings (hällristningar) and an anti-aircraft battery from World War II.

Buy

The IKEA store in Kungens Kurva was built in 1965, and remains the largest in a chain of more than 300 stores.
  • 🌍 IKEA Kungens Kurva, Modulvägen 1 (Kungens Kurva (buses from T Skärholmen)). The largest IKEA in the world. 
  • 🌍 Farsta Centrum (T Farsta), Farstaplan 20. M-F 10:00-19:00, Sa 10:00-17:00, Su 11:00-17:00. 
  • 🌍 Skärholmen Centrum (T Skärholmen), Bredholmsgatan 4. M-F 10:00-19:00, Sa 10:00-17:00, Su 11:00-17:00. 
  • 🌍 Heron City (T Skärholmen), Dialoggatan 2. An American-style shopping and entertainment venue, with bowling alleys and a multiplex cinema. 

Eat

  • 🌍 IKEA Kungens Kurva, Modulvägen 1. The restaurant at IKEA has the cheapest meals in the area, if you happen to pass by. (updated May 2015)

Drink

  • 🌍 Rågsveds Krog, Sköllerstagatan 6 (T Rågsved). Legendary and often quite rowdy karaoke bar. (updated Dec 2023)

The hotels at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö and the Globe Arena might be heavily booked during events. Book well in advance, if you want to stay near the venues.

  • 🌍 Scandic Talk Hotel, Mässvägen 2 (Älvsjö), ☏ +46 8 5888 20 00. The Scandic (formerly Rica) Talk Hotel is next door to Stockholm International Fairs, and a short stroll from the Älvsjö station. The hotel is spacious, clean and modern, with the bathrooms extremely pleasing; big bath, good temperature-control shower. All toiletries were in big wall-fixed dispensers, but nice ones, with good quality contents! The breakfast buffet is extensive and plentiful. From 1494 kr. 

Stay safe

There might be drunk brawls around the suburban centers along the tunnelbana. Some areas like Vårberg, Rågsved, Norra Botkyrka are known for gang crimes
