History

At one point Robe was the third largest port in South Australia, although the rugged coastline makes it generally unsuitable for shipping.

By car

Robe is on the coast between Mount Gambier and Adelaide, just off B1. It is around 3.5 hours and 340km drive from Adelaide and around 7 hours and 500km from Melbourne.

By bus

Premier Stateliner run a bus every day except Saturday from Adelaide to Mount Gambier via the coast, which stops in Robe.

  • 🌍 Robe Lighthouse. Not historic, but a concrete structure built in 1972, which its purpose was to replace the now defunct Cape Jaffa Lighthouse near Kingston. 
  • 🌍 Robe Customs House Maritime Museum, 1 Royal Circus, ☏ +61 8 8768 2465. A customs house that was built in 1863 for the Harbor Master which now operates as a museum. None, except for gold coin donations. (updated Oct 2021)
