Jokkmokk

Jokkmokk is a town in Swedish Lappland, in the middle of Norrbotten County. Jokkmokk Municipality (Swedish: Jokkmokks kommun), is one of Sweden's largest, containing a land area of 18,000 km² (larger than many small countries) but no more than 5,000 inhabitants. The village Kvikkjokk by the Laponia national park system is treated in its own article.

Jokkmokk has been a seat of Sami culture, with an annual market fair, which has been held since 1605.

The nearest airports are Luleå and Gällivare.

The Inlandsbanan trains (limited season) stop in Varjisträsk, Kåbdalis, Geografiska Polcirkeln, Jokkmokk centre, Vajkijaur (the station is a few kilometres from the village) and Porjus. There are also night trains from Stockholm to Murjek 60 km from the centre. There are bus connections from Luleå and from Murjek to Jokkmokk. See resrobot.se.

When going by car from south Sweden, the road E45, or E4 plus road 374 or 97 are suitable. The E4 connection is faster than E45, but they have similar length.

• 🌍 Ájtte (Ájtte, Svenskt fjäll- och samemuseum), Kyrkogatan 3. Ájtte specializes in the culture and nature of the mountainous area of Northern Sweden, and which is also the main museum and archive for the Sami culture of Sweden. The word ájtte is a Lule Sami language one, meaning storage hut and referring to the museum as an archive for artifacts of the Sami cultural heritage. (updated Mar 2021)

• Laponia, a large wilderness area with several national parks, is partly in Jokkmokk:
  • 🌍 Muddus (national park, 493 km²) — mostly in Gällivare, but reachable via Porjus
  • 🌍 Padjelanta (national park, 1,984 km²)
  • 🌍 Sarek (national park, 1,970 km²) — the oldest national park in Europe, with six of the thirteen highest fells in Sweden
  • 🌍 Stora Sjöfallet (national park, 1,278 km²) — founded at one of Europe's most impressing waterfalls, which however soon afterwards was dammed for hydroelectric power
  • 🌍 Stubba (nature reserve, 350 km²) — in Gällivare, but reachable via Porjus
  • A trailhead to the Kungsleden, Padjelantaleden and Nordkalottleden trails through Laponia is in 🌍 Kvikkjokk, 120 km from Jokkmokk centre, reachable via Murjek.
• Jokkmokk Market. First Th–Sa in February. Held since 1605. Local handicraft, Sámi produce and ordinary market fare; also a big cultural happening. The 2021 and 2022 markets were held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
