Penrose (New South Wales)

town in Wingecarribee Shire, New South Wales, Australia

Penrose is a small quaint town of New South Wales' Southern Highlands region. There's not much in the village, but it is a good spot for trainspotting on the Southern Highlands Line's quietest station, but also for crying when none of the longer-distance trains stop for you.

Get in

By train

The town's primary point of interest, 🌍 Penrose Station, is not well-served and thus makes it impossible to day-trip from Sydney by train. On weekdays, trains from Goulburn arrive at Penrose at 6:06AM, 8:10AM, 8:30PM, 10PM and a bus replacement at 2:11PM. On weekends, this is worse, with trains from Goulburn arriving at 6:32AM, 9:43PM and a bus-replacement at 3:16PM.

Trains from Moss Vale station on weekdays arrive at 6:29AM, 9:52AM while from Campbelltown station in Sydney, 6:36PM and 8:25PM. Weekends from Moss Vale and the train arrives at 5:05AM and 12:12PM, and from Central, 8:16PM.

The timetable can be found at the TfNSW website.

By car

Penrose is around 20 minutes east of the M31 Hume Hwy from Marulan. If travelling on the Hume southbound, turn left onto Highland Way and continue for about 25 km (16 mi). If travelling northbound, you will need to do a right turn on Highland Way (which can be difficult to do during peak holiday season, but doable). Alternatively for southbound travellers, Murrimba Road takes you from the Hume to Wingello, which is often faster but the road can often times be poorly maintained.

From Moss Vale or Exeter, use Exeter and Penrose Rd southbound via Bundanoon until Penrose.

The town is small enough to be navigable on foot.
