Northern Senegal

Northern Senegal is a region in Senegal composed of the administrative regions of St. Louis, Louga, and Matam.

• 🌍 Saint-Louis — this former colonial capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts many tourists to see its architecture and its huge bird sanctuary
• 🌍 Louga — a cattle market centre and transportation hub
• 🌍 Matam — an agricultural town that extends along the Senegal river, facing Mauritania
• 🌍 Podor – the northernmost town in Senegal

• 🌍 Langue de Barbarie National Park — was created for the protection of important sea turtle nesting sites and is an important migratory bird sanctuary, hosting over 160 different species of migratory and sedentary birds, and numerous reptile species, crabs, monkeys and other wildlife

There are no scheduled flights into the region. Dakar is you most likely point of entry, unless you're coming from Mauritania.

Pelicans in Djoudj

The Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, in northern Biffeche, north east of St-Louis, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Of almost 400 species of birds, the most visible are pelicans and flamingos.

Many of St. Louis's buildings hold their old character with many brightly colored buildings and beautiful balconies to be seen all around the island. And you can go to Guet Ndar, the fishing village on the Langue de Barberie, to watch the fisherman bring in their catch.

The Saint-Louis International Jazz Festival attracts jazz musicians and visitors from around the world in late May each year.
