Naracoorte

Naracoorte is a town on the Limestone Coast of South Australia. It's near Naracoorte Caves National Park, South Australia's only UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Naracoorte is between Mount Gambier and Adelaide. It is approximately 4 hour's drive by car from Adelaide via the M1 South Eastern Freeway, A8 Dukes Highway, and the A66 Riddoch Highway.

Naracoorte Caves

• 🌍 Naracoorte Caves National Park. UNESCO World Heritage listed site of mammalian fossils. The caves contains the fossils of enormous extinct Australian megafauna such as the marsupial lion, giant kangaroo as well as five-metre long snakes. Over the last two to three million years, geological processes brought sand and soil into the caves. This created thick sedimentary deposits which preserved the remains of the animal living in and around the caves at the time. Up to 20 species of megafauna are preserved at a remarkable level across multiple caves. The site is one of the jewels in Australian paleontology.

Travel south along the Riddoch Highway to visit winery cellar doors in the Coonawarra wine region or northwest to the Padthaway region.

• 🌍 Caves Café, Unnamed Road, ☏ +61 8 8760 1213. M-Sa 10AM-3PM, Su 9:30AM-3PM. Peak visitor times (SA school holidays/public holidays): 9:30AM-4PM. Popular with the locals, and whether its a snack or lunch, this cafe is perfect given its close proximity to the caves. (updated Oct 2021)
