Sungai Pinang is a village on the Indian Ocean coast in West Sumatra Province, Indonesia.
Nagari Sungai Pinang (nagari is the local word for village) is in Koto XI Tarusan district, 45 km south of the city centre of Padang. It is a small fishing village with a population of about 2,000. Most of the inhabitants work as fishermen and women as farmer in the rice fields. The village is between the Indian Ocean coast on the western side, and the Sungai Pinang Conservation Forest on the eastern side, with white sandy beaches along the coast.
The attraction of this village is its proximity to nature. Trekking in the wild jungle in Sungai Pinang forest, you may to see wild animals such as Gibbon family, macaque, deer, many kind of birds and if you are lucky, you may see the Sumatran tiger. For marine activities, there are five islands to enjoy diving and snorkeling or canoeing along the coast. One of them is Marak Island use for centre of Gibbon rehabilitation project of Kalaweit Program Sumatra. Joining the fishermen in their boats is also a great experience.
Owing to the generous locals, it is possible to sleep in a villager's house. Ask around.
