Marktl is famous throughout the world to be the birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI. Joseph Ratzinger was born here on 16 April 1927 and elected Pope in Rome on 19 April 2005. Cardinal Ratzinger, former dean of the College of Cardinals and prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of faith, he retired on February 28, 2013 for reasons of age.

The nearest major international airport is Munich Airport (MUC) (also called "Franz Josef Strauss"), located 92 km from Marktl, with a journey time of approximately one hour by car. As the second largest airport in Germany, it is connected to numerous cities.
