Larvik is a city in Vestfold. Larvik is the southernmost larger city in Vestfold, with about 24,000 inhabitants (2016). Larvik city is the administrative centre of Larvik municipality, which is home to some other larger villages, including Stavern and Helgeroa, some of which are just minutes away with bus.

  • Hirtshals Colorline operates a super fast ferry on the line, which does the crossing in 3 hours 45 minutes. Tickets for an adult cost from €32 one way, while the price for a car starts at €46; departure times from Hirtshals were 12:45 and 22:15 (Nov 2021).

The Norwegian state railways (NSB) has departures from Oslo once every hour throughout the day, journey time from Oslo is 2 hours 6 minutes on most departures. There are also two daily trains ftom Stavanger, the western terminus of the southern railway line.

Get around

Buses are frequently roaming the city centre and to other villages along the seashore. Some buses also travel inland to places like Kvelde and Svarstad.

  • 🌍 Bøkeskogen. Norways largest beech forest. Beech is rare in Norway and the Larvik beech forest is the northernmost beech forest of significance. It was the first public outdoor recreational area in Norway and has been managed as a park since 1884. The area is simply known as Bøkeskogen, literally "The Beech forest". The park is near the city centre, between the centre and the Farris lake. The forest sits on the Vestfold Ra, the largest terminal moraine in Scandinavia formed during the last phase of the ice age some 12,000 years ago. There burial mounds from the iron age (pre-viking) in the forest. 
  • 🌍 Herregården. Former residence for Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve. The building started in 1674. 
  • 🌍 Svenner lighthouse. 
  • 🌍 Kaupang. Around 800 AD a Viking trade post was established here, and today it is both an archaeological site and a venue for Viking events in the summer. (updated Feb 2018)
  • 🌍 Mølen tumuli (Mølen gravrøyser), near Larvik. Several hundred burial mounds or tumuli made from boulders. The largest are around 30 m wide and 5 m tall. Presumably made during the bronze age from 1500 years BC until the Viking age. This is a cultural heritage monument and it is forbidden to change or take anything. (updated Jan 2021)
