Iznájar

Iznájar is a traditional Spanish "pueblo blanco" (or white village) in the province of Córdoba. Its main business of this town of 4300 people (2019) is the cultivation of olives, although tourism is an increasingly important source of income for the town. Visitors are drawn to the pleasant beaches in summer and to the range of fiestas throughout the year.

Iznájar is set on a huge rock with amazing views of the Embalse De Iznajar. This lake is the largest lake in Andalucia and has its own beach. Surrounding hamlets include La Celada, El Higueral and Solerche.

Understand

Iznájar is an extremely popular tourist village due to it being on the edge of the Embalse de Iznájar, a 999,000-hectolitre artificial lake that permits fishing and water sports including sailing and kayaking throughout the year.

The village is worth visiting all year round, although has special Fiestas including Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week) and around 7th-9th of September there are huge processions in honour of the Virgin of Piety. More than 250,000 people come to witness this incredibly moving event.

  • Iznajar Castle or Hisn-Ashar (Castillo de Iznájar). Castle of Arab origin dating from the 8th century. It has been declared an asset of cultural interest.

  • Sierra Subeticas Natural Park. 
  • Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua y Piedad. Its Virgin is the patron saint of the town and has much devotion throughout the region.

  • Skiing: Ski in the famous Sol y Nieve area, the second highest skiing resort in Europe here you can enjoy the soft white snow whilst soaking in the glorious sunshine. Ski hire passes, clothing and ski guide available.
  • Tennis: With over 8 tennis courts, a choice of floodlights and bar area. 20 min drive away and open from 08:00 till midnight.

  • Walking: Walks range from a historic route around the village of Iznajar, which is an easy walk through the streets and miradors of this ancient village, to a walk up to the peak of Pico Bermejo standing at 1474 metres, not an easy walk but attainable by most fit walkers and without a time limit.
