Hollola is a municipality in Päijänne Tavastia, Finland. Hollola includes the former municipality of Hämeenkoski.

Understand

Hollola is a large municipality with some 23,000 inhabitants. The parish village of Hollola only has some 500 inhabitants, while Salpakangas, close to Lahti, has become the municipal centre, with more than half of the municipality's inhabitants.

Lahti was part of Hollola until it separated into its own market town in 1878.

Get in

Hollola's centre Salpakangas lies some 10 km west from Lahti centre, with Hämeenlinnantie the main connection. Lahti is on E75.

Highway 12 between Kouvola and Tampere passes south of Lahti's and Hollola's centres. Highway 24 between Lahti and Jämsä passes through the eastern part of Hollola. Highway 54 leads in from Riihimäki.

By train

Lahti has good train connections from the capital region, Riihimäki and Kouvola.

The lake Vesijärvi lies between the eastern parts of Hollola (Vesikansa, "water folks") and the rest of the municipality (Maakansa, "land folks"), with connections via Lahti (or Vääksy) or by boat.

Hollola parish church
  • 🌍 Hollolan kirkko (Hollola parish church), Rantatie 917 (12 km northwest of the town centre). Hollola's medieval stone church with 550 seats. The church belongs to the third generation of Finnish stone churches, which were built between 1480 and 1560. It was completed in its current form between 1495 and 1510: the sacristy in 1495, the church hall in 1500 and the armory after 1505. The stone church is famous for its well-preserved wooden sculptures. Due to lightning striking the roof, the wooden roof structures of the church burned in 1642. The church was completely renovated in 1934–1935. On the south side of the church, there is a yellow belfry designed by Carl Ludvig Engel in Empire style, built between 1829 and 1831.   • 🌍 Devil's Nest (Pirunpesä) (in the Tiirismaa nature reserve). A canyon. A hiking trail, which is 4.5 km long, passes by Pirunpesä. (updated Dec 2022)
  • Kapatuosia castle hill (north of Hollola church). It dates to the Iron Age, the Middle Ages, or both. Linnavuori has an observation tower that is open in the summer, which is also used for bird watching. 
  • Homeland Museum and Hentilä House Museum (near the church). The museum is in a two-storey warehouse building. On the first floor, there is an exhibition about the wartime. 
  • Hentilä house museum. It contains old buildings of the area and a large house from Asikkala. 
  • Municipal hall (opposite the Hollola church). The architect Vilho Penttilä designed the Hollola municipal building, which was completed in 1902. It is Finland's first wooden municipal building designed by an architect. There is a cafe.
