Firouzabad

Firouzabad (Persian: فيروزآباد‎‎ ; Middle Persian: Gōr or Ardashir-Khwarrah, literally "The Glory of Ardashir") is a city with population of 60,000 in Fars province, Iran. The town is surrounded by a mud wall and ditch.

There used to be an ancient city of Gōr on this place, which was later destroyed by Alexander of Macedonia. Centuries later, Ardashir I, founder of the Sassanid Dynasty, revived the city before it was ransacked during the Arab invasion of the 7th century.

Town is located 120 km south of Shiraz.

• 🌍 Qal'eh Dokhtar (قلعه دختر, also known as The Maiden Castle). A castle made by Ardashir I, in present day Fars, Iran, in 209 AD. It is located on a mountain slope near the Firouzabad-Shiraz road.The fortified palace contains many of the recurring features of Sasanian palace and civic architecture: long halls, arches, domes, recessed windows, and stairways. • 🌍 Castle of Ardeshir e Babakan (قلعه اردشير بابکان, also known as the Atash-kadeh) (6 km north of Firouzabad). M-F 08:00–18:00. A castle located on the slopes of the mountain on which Ghal'eh Dokhtar is situated on. Built in AD 224 by Ardashir I of the Sassanian Empire, it is located two kilometres north of the ancient city of Gor, i.e. the old city of Firouzabad in Fars. The palace was built next to a picturesque pond that was fed by a natural spring, perhaps in connection with the Persian goddess of water and growth, Anahita. 150,000 rials. (updated Sep 2014)
