Evenkia

Evenkia (Russian: Эвенки́я eh-vehn-KEE-yuh) is a vast Siberian region in Krasnoyarsk Krai, the size of Turkey, but with a very sparse population — a mere 0.023 people per km, less than 20,000 people in total. Evenkia borders Taymyria to the north, Yakutia to the east, Irkutsk Oblast to the southeast, and the Krasnoyarsk region to the southwest and west.

  • 🌍 Tungussky Nature Reserve — visitable by a permit obtained from the nearby village of Vanavara, this large patch of taiga in southeast Evenkia has a number of hiking trails, all leading to the impact site of the 1908 Tunguska Event.

Evenkia's population is about 60% ethnic Russian, but is named after its nomadic Evenk minority (~22% of the population), a small ethnic group that traditionally lives off reindeer herding, related to the Manchu of Northeast China and others in the Russian Far East.
