Ellesmere is a small market town in Shropshire, England, near the Welsh border. It is notable for its proximity to a number of prominent meres (shallow lakes, ponds, or wetlands).

Not to be confused with Ellesmere Port, a town in Cheshire.

Ellesmere lost its railway connection in 1965.

By road

Ellesmere is at the junction of the A495 and A528 roads.

Get around

Lakeside Coaches run the 208 town service on Tuesdays and Fridays, running every 30 minutes between 9AM and 2PM. Any other day you will have to walk!

See

The large mere with boats for hire on the edge of town. Also there are many other nice meres with pleasant walks around them within a few miles, Colemere especially.

  • 🌍 St Mary's Church, Church Hill, SY12 0HB, +44 1691 622571. Su services at 8AM and 10:15AM, spoken services on W at 10:15AM and 8PM. Norman church, which was rebuilt by George Gilbert Scott in 1849.
  • 🌍 The Old Town Hall, High Street. Ellesmere's most notable building was built in 1833. It is a grade II listed building, which houses an estate agent on the ground floor.

  • The town's semi-professional football club, Ellesmere Rangers FC, play their home games at Beech Grove. They are members of the North West Counties Football League Division One South, the 10th tier of the English football pyramid.

Ellesmere has at least eight pubs and a social club. Good pubs to visit are The Swan, The Railway, The Market, and the Red Lion which is on the edge of town near to the mere and next to the church.
