Die

commune in Drôme, France

Die is a village of 4,700 people (2018) in Drôme. Tourists come during the summer, especially from the Netherlands and Belgium, to use the camp sites around the Drôme valley. In winter, the tourists come from the surrounding regions to do winter sports at the Col du Rousset ski station (in the Vercors Mountains).

The region around Die is known as the Diois.

Die sits at the foot of the Vercors massif on the banks of the Drôme river. Die and its valley are dominated by the mountain of Glandasse at 2,041 m, a massive and steep rocky barrier making up the southern end of the Vercors.

Die is approximately 60 km east of Valence.

By train

The Die station is on the line Livron to Aspres-sur-Buëch and is served by:the Valence - Die - Gap 13 TER line; and by the Intercité night train Paris-Austerlitz - Briançon via Valence.

By car

The town is accessible by the departmental road 93 (also called route des Alpes or Gap); to the north by the RD 518 from Villard-de-Lans , La Chapelle-en-Vercors and the Rousset pass. On the Gapençais side, to the east, access is from the RD 1075 linking Sisteron to Grenoble ( Lus-la-Croix-Haute ).

To the west, on the Rhône valley side, the nearest motorway exit is exit Exit 16 Loriol-sur-Drôme of the A7, in Loriol.

By bus

The town is served by two regular bus lines, and by an on-demand bus service for the Diois valleys, not served by a regular line:

  • line 28: Valence - Crest - Die - Luc-en-Diois
  • line 29: Beaurières - Luc-en-Diois - Châtillon-en-Diois - Die

Mosaic of four rivers
  • 🌍 Episcopal Palace, Place de l'hôtel de ville, ☏ +33 4 75 22 40 05. April 15-June 5: W 10:00-12:00, June 15-September 15: W Sa. It is possible to enter the episcopal palace of Die to see a completely preserved medieval mosaic. The mosaic of four rivers adorns the floor of the Saint-Nicolas chapel (12th century). It is classified as historical monuments and wallpapers (18th century) preserved on the walls of the chapel. You can also observe inscriptions in Latin and Roman reliefs that the bishops had inserted in the exterior facades of the palace. Adult €3, under 16 free. (updated May 2018)
