Czerniejewo

city of Poland

Czerniejewo is a town in Wielkopolskie. It is mostly known for its palace, its park and town layout built around it.

Understand

Settlement in Czerniejewo existed probably in prehistoric times, however the oldest written remarks of Czerniejewo are from the late 13th century. It was one of the smallest towns in Wielkopolskie though of remarkable importance as it was halfway between cities of Gniezno and Giecz, early Polish capitals. A castle (of which nothing remains) was built in 14th century and church of John the Baptist was founded in the 16th century. Ownership of the town changed frequently, and it was severely damaged after The Deluge in the 17th century.

Around 1770 General Jan Lipski received Czerniejewo as dowry and invested a lot in the town,. He built his palace in the north (presumably on place of former castle) complete with extensive landscaping, constructing distillery, tannery, brick factory, water mill and adding another tower to the church, essentialy creating the town as it is now. The city's expansion continued in the 19th century, replacing wooden buildings with masonry structures and growing in population.
