Chuquisaca (department)

The Chuquisaca Department is a region of in south-central Bolivia in a region where the Altiplano merges with the Valles (valleys) into the Gran Chaco lowlands. The name comes from the Quechua name for the capital Sucre.

• 🌍 Sucre — one of Bolivia's two capitals, it is a popular tourist magnet with lots to see and do including a charming colonial center, hiking, partying and seeing dinosaur footprints
• 🌍 Tarabuco — famous for its handicrafts and arts, and its Sunday market

• 🌍 Cordillera de los Frailes — a mountainous region in the central parts of the Bolivian Andes

The development of the department and its capital is closely linked to the silver city of Potosí. The area was managed from Sucre because the climate there is less harsh than on the plateau.

The climate is temperate and dry, with warm days and cool nights throughout the year. The eastern Chaco plain is hot and humid in summer and mild and dry in winter.

Sucre can be reached by bus from the main cities of Bolivia.
