Canton and Wills Point were major rivals over rightful designee of county seat status, so much so that Wills Point townspeople stole court records that eventually were returned when the governor decreed Canton official status as seat of Van Zandt County. Canton people were so miffed over the matter that they refused to have any business with the railroad depot in Wills Point despite not having their own, and instead set up one at nearby Edgewood.
