Bismarck Archipelago
archipelago in the Pacific Ocean north of New Guinea
The Bismarck Archipelago is in Papua New Guinea, around the Bismarck Sea northeast of that country's main island.
It consists of three main islands and many smaller ones:
The capitals are Rabaul, Kavieng and Lorengau, respectively. Rabaul has a population of about 20,000; the others are smaller.
