Alto Alentejo

Alto Alentejo is the northern half of the Alentejo region of Portugal.

• 🌍 Alandroal — a municipality that includes Terena, a beautiful village with an imposing castle
• 🌍 Arraiolos — famous for its castle and its embroidered wool rugs and carpets
• 🌍 Avis — historical home of the Knights of the Order of Aviz, with a castle
• 🌍 Campo Maior – border town with a castle and a bone chapel
• 🌍 Castelo de Vide — a romantic village with beautiful gardens, an abundance of vegetation, a mild climate, known as "Sintra do Alentejo"
• 🌍 Elvas — a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its excellent star fort
• 🌍 Estremoz — known for its fine to medium marble that occurs in several colours that has been used to build the town
• 🌍 Évora — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a well-preserved old town centre, still partially enclosed by medieval walls, and many monuments including a Roman Temple
• 🌍 Monforte — farming with a castle and a Roman bridge
• 🌍 Marvão — a mountain village perched on the Serra de São Mamede
• 🌍 Nisa – municipality that's home to several castles
• 🌍 Portalegre – cathedral city noted for its tapestries
• 🌍 Redondo — town with a castle and a wine museum
• 🌍 Reguengos de Monsaraz — one of the oldest Portuguese settlements of southern Portugal, with hundreds of megalithic monuments
• 🌍 Vendas Novas — is famous for its bifanas (thinly sliced pork either fried and served on a soft roll with mustard), considered the best bifanas in Portugal
• 🌍 Vila Viçosa — a historic, monumental town with a historic palace

Alto Alentejo (AHL-too uh-lehn-TAY-zhoo, /ˈaɫ.tu ɐ.ɫẽ.ˈtɐj.ʒu/)

• Comboios de Portugal (CP) provides intercity rail service on the Linha do Alentejo line from Lisbon to Évora. Regional trains run once daily on the Linha do Leste line from Entroncamento and Badajoz (Spain) to Portalegre and Elvas.
• Rede Expressos offers long-distance intercity bus service from throughout the country to Évora, Portalegre, and many other cities in the region.
