Erecting shop at the Crewe railway works c. 1890

Opened in 1840, the Crewe railway works employed 20,000 people at their height. Over 7,000 steam locomotives and hundreds of diesel locomotives were built there. During the Second World War, the works also produced Covenanter tanks.
