People's Park in Berkeley, California, is a plot of land that is owned by the University of California, Berkeley. Located east of Telegraph Avenue, bound by Haste and Bowditch Streets, and Dwight Way, People's Park was created during the radical political activism of the late 1960s.
While the land is the property of the University of California, People's Park established itself in the early 1970s as a de facto public park. The City of Berkeley declared it a historical and cultural landmark in 1984. Before it was officially closed off to the public, it was a major site for low-income and homeless population of the East Bay. During that time, many social welfare organizations volunteered their services at the park and activities were held for the local population. (Full article...)
