Background

In typical Australian preselection contests, candidates must win 50 percent of the vote plus one (similar to runoff voting), with the voting process taking up to several hours.[1]

Beginning in 2023 and continuing in 2024, preselections were held by the Liberal Party of Australia to decide its candidates in the House of Representatives and the Senate for the next federal election. Following the 2022 federal election, the Liberal Party was left with 27 seats in the House of Representatives and 23 in the Senate (not including Liberal National Party of Queensland members who sit with the Liberals in parliament).[2][3] The Liberals went down to 26 seats in April 2023, when they lost the seat of Aston to Labor at a by-election triggered by the resignation of incumbent MP Alan Tudge.[4][5]

A notable preselection occurred in Monash, where incumbent MP Russell Broadbent lost his seat, subsequently resigning from the Liberal Party to sit as an independent.[1]

New South Wales

Bradfield

Incumbent Liberal MP Paul Fletcher was challenged by Paul Nettelbeck, but his nomination was blocked by the NSW Liberal Party's nomination review committee, meaning Fletcher won preselection unopposed on 10 December 2023.[6]

Farrer

Deputy Liberal leader Sussan Ley was challenged in her seat by conservative Jean Haynes − however, Haynes was blocked from running by the NSW Liberal Party's nomination review committee, meaning Ley won preselection unopposed on 26 August 2023.[7]

Mitchell

Incumbent Liberal MP Alex Hawke was unsuccessfully challenged by Michael Abrahams, a conservative Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel, but was re-endorsed on 6 December 2023.[8]

Victoria

Senate (third spot)

After incumbent senator David Van resigned from the Liberal Party in June 2023, a preselection took place on 26 November 2023 for the third spot on the party's Senate ticket. Former preacher Kyle Hoppitt defeated former senator Greg Mirabella, businesswoman Karyn Sobels and former independent Melton candidate Jarrod Bingham.

Bendigo

Greater Bendigo councillor Matthew Evans won preselection unopposed on 3 December 2023, and will contest the seat against incumbent Labor MP Lisa Chesters.[10]

Chisholm

City of Monash councillor Theo Zographos won preselection unopposed in early November 2023, and will contest the seat against incumbent Labor MP Carina Garland.[11]

Goldstein

A preselection for Goldstein, currently held by independent MP Zoe Daniel, is expected to take place in 2024. Former MP Tim Wilson (who lost the seat in 2022) and state MP for Brighton James Newbury are reported to be contesting.[12]

Higgins

Former MP Katie Allen, who was defeated in Higgins in 2022, defeated Port Phillip councillor Marcus Pearl on 19 November 2023 and will now re-contest the seat against Labor MP Michelle Ananda-Rajah. A third candidate, William Stoltz, withdrew on 9 November due to personal reasons, reportedly relating to his previous intelligence career.[13][14]

Kooyong

A preselection for Kooyong, currently held by independent MP Monique Ryan, is expected to take place in early 2024. Amelia Hamer, grand-niece of former Victorian premier Rupert Hamer, surgeon Susan Morris, barrister Michael Flynn KC, and Transgender Victoria chair Rochelle Pattison are reported to be contesting, while former MP Josh Frydenberg has publicly declined to run.

Monash
