Whether your dress shrank in the wash, you’ve had a growth spurt, or you just want a little extra length for style or modesty, there are several ways to add fabric and extend the hem. This guide will walk you through how to make your dress longer, from sewing on a fabric extension.

Step 1

Fold and pin a piece of fabric in the beginning, middle, and end to prepare for cutting.

Step 2

Cut the fabric into two pieces, having one slightly larger than the other.

Step 3

Measure the width of the dress and fabric.
You want the fabric to be at least twice as wide as the width of the dress.

Step 4

After cutting the fabric, take the pins out.
Begin to sew the fabric along the entire length.
Scrunch as you go to create a ruffle.
Pay attention to the needle to ensure that you don't poke yourself.

Step 5

Attach a longer ruffled fabric to the shorter ruffled fabric by sewing the two together.
Use the same stitching as before.
Do not scrunch this stitching.
