Hello there! My name is Gabriella Su. I am a third year undergraduate student at University of California, Davis currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. I was born and raised in San Francisco and have always had a passion for problem solving!

Once I complete my degree, I hope to gain experience as a process engineer in the energy industry, which I am enthusiastic about. I think all forms of up and coming renewable energy are really innovative ways for improving the environment and the way energy is generated and used.

Since a young age, I have seen my dad repair and fix a lot of household items as well as dental equipment in his office. There were several times where I was allowed to lend a helping hand. Seeing that I was interested in hands-on projects, he always gave me small jobs of assembling desks, chairs, and even home gym equipment that were ordered for our home as well as his dental office. I think this experience with assembling things and using basic tools gives me a lot of important background knowledge for repairs as well.

A recent project that I spent some time on was some data manipulation through python. I worked with some data provided by a lab which came from transmission electron microscopy. I was able to write up code that could convert the data file into a png file where the data could be visualized.

One repair that I am particularly fond of is fixing holes in my jeans. When I was much younger I would always get holes in the knee part of my jeans, so my mom showed me how to repair them either just by sewing the gap together, or sometimes a patch was needed for a bigger hole. I really enjoyed how there was an artistic aspect to the repair. On this note, something I would like to learn to repair is a sewing machine because I know that it's really easy for them to get jammed or malfunction.

Skills:

  • Python programming language
  • Advanced mathematics (calculus, differential equations)
  • Teamwork and communication
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Besides spending my time on my engineering curriculum, I enjoy doing pottery, baking, reading, and going on hikes or long walks. I am actually pretty passionate about ceramics and have been doing it for many years. In fact, something that I would like to explore more is kiln operation and repair. Being exposed to so many kilns has taught me some things about the way they are operated and I would love to learn more about the technical side of the way they are wired.
