Hi! My name is Melinda. I am currently a senior at the University of California, Davis, pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering. Growing up, I was always fascinated by the way structures could shape and sustain. This early interest grew into a passion for understanding how engineering can not only create but protect. I’ve always believed that behind every structure—whether it’s a skyscraper or a simple bridge there is a blend of creativity, precision, and responsibility. I am excited to take the next step in my journey as an engineer, ready to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve developed in both the classroom and the field. For me, civil engineering is more than just solving technical problems; it’s about building solutions that ensure safety, sustainability, and resilience for future generations.

Skills

  • Proficient in AutoCAD, RISA, SAP2000, SkyCiv, and MS Office Suite
  • Programming skills in Python, C, C++, and MATLAB
  • Experience in structural analysis, project cost estimation, and construction management
  • Skilled in technical reporting, presentation, and leadership in collaborative projects

Projects

Senior Design Project: Seismic-Resilient Steel Building:

  • I led the design of a seismic-resilient steel building, working closely with my team to calculate and optimize the structural components. Using Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs) to enhance seismic performance and withstand wind loads, I developed an Excel calculation program to automate steel member selection and analysis. This allowed for quick iterations, ensuring we met the stringent performance criteria for beams, girders, and columns. The project not only tested my technical skills but also highlighted the importance of collaboration in delivering innovative structural solutions.

Warehouse Rack Design:

  • My hands-on experiences at my internships, where I contributed to the design of large-scale warehouse and storage facilities, have given me invaluable insights into real-world structural challenges. During my internships, I played a key role in designing rack systems for over 100,000 pallet positions using structural steel and analyzing critical stability components like moment-resisting and braced frames. These experiences reinforced my drive to approach structural engineering with both creativity and precision.

Concrete Beam Design and Testing:

  • I led a project focused on the design and testing of reinforced concrete beams. From calculating material proportions to testing the beams under various load conditions, this project allowed me to deepen my understanding of material behavior and structural performance.

Repair Experience

  • Strawberry vase reconstruction
  • IKEA Furniture
  • Everyday Gadgets

I am excited to contribute to iFixit’s mission by creating guides that make repairs accessible to everyone. I look forward to creating guides that are clear, easy to follow, and helpful for anyone looking to extend the life of their products.
