Hi all! I am Nick Schultz, and I joined iFixit as a Junior Technical Writer in 2024. Here is a little about me:
Education & Experience
I graduated from Columbia State in Franklin, TN with an AAS in general technology and a certificate in film production. This allowed me to build a bunch of cool robots and shoot several short films. I even directed a short film for the 54 Hour Film Festival in 2023, where we won six category awards.
As early as elementary school, I was treated as the school's go-to tech problem solver. By high school, the administrators and faculty would literally pull me out of class to fix their printers, ask me advice on the font they chose for graduation pamphlets, or even fix their kid's broken gaming rig. I’ve purchased, used, built, upgraded, repaired, and resold countless devices to familiarize myself with them and keep them running. This knowledge has allowed me to help others with their device repairs and purchasing decisions, with anyone that knows me treating me as their primary tech support thanks to my troubleshooting abilities. This also gave me the connections to be a video & lighting tech for about a year in the Nashville area, where I got to be a part of some truly epic events, concerts, and music videos.
Volunteer Work
Outside of school, the area I've spent the most time is volunteering for the Boy Scouts of America, specifically the Order of the Arrow lodge in Middle Tennessee. In that organization I rose through the ranks to the point where I was managing large service events with hundreds of people, and I am hugely appreciative of those experiences. I still spend time giving back to that organization by renovating the lodge building with my brethren, where we have rebuilt the kitchen and bathrooms, installed lights in the parking lot, and most recently installed a fully-custom open-source A/V system that we built from scratch.
Hobbies
Outside of work I spend most of my time tinkering, exploring mountains, and helping my girlfriend do things I didn't even know were possible (i.e. multiplayer Slime Rancher, building a mattress, and pinpointing a map location on Street View). I also enjoy multiplayer video games and find them to be an absolutely incredible tool for keeping up with friends across the globe. For my friends that are local, we like to go backpacking together - my longest trek was 2 weeks across nearly 100 miles of mountainous terrain.
My Favorite Fix
My favorite fix was my Aorus FV43U power supply replacement, since I had never repaired a monitor and because it was cheaper than it would've been under warranty if Gigabyte had agreed to honor it (disclaimer - they didn't). It was also my first guide on iFixit!
