My name is Jackson, and I am currently a sophomore at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. I grew up playing hockey, and I continue to here at UMD. My passion for sports combined with my excellent ability with numbers and math have led me to pursue a Data Science major here at UMD. My goal is to graduate with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in data science when I graduate in the spring of 2026. I would like to continue playing hockey after college, professionally wherever that takes me. Once I am finished on the playing side, I would like to continue to work in sports using my data science background to analyze sports and optimize athletes, teams, or organizations. My ultimate goal is to work in the player personnel side for an NHL team and optimize their choices for players using the data I collect.

I think this project is going to go a long way to apply my teamwork and leadership skills in a different environment. I have always played on a team, so the ideas of unselfishness and tenacity have been drilled into my head. I have also been a captain of a team on four separate occasions, which really developed my leadership and communication skills on and off the ice. I am excited about this project to get an opportunity to apply these skills in a different type of setting.

Another interesting thing about me is that through my hockey playing, I have lived in a bunch of different places and been to different places I never thought I would go. I am originally from Colorado. When I was about to turn 17, I moved away from home for the first time to play hockey in Wenatchee in Washington state, as well as attending a public high school there. The following year played in Saskatchewan (Canada), then spent two years in New Hampshire, finished my freshman year of college at Lake Forest College (Illinois), and now I am here at UMASS Dartmouth as a sophomore. Through all these different spots I met a bunch of different backgrounds and different ways of thinking than me. I think this will benefit me in a professional environment as well as in a team environment, such as this because I can communicate effectively with people who may be completely different with me.
