We are deeply saddened to share that Richard Mayer, known here simply as “mayer,” passed away on November 4, 2023. Mayer was not just a cornerstone of the iFixit community but a mentor, problem-solver, and teacher to so many of us.

A true authority on all things Mac, Mayer’s knowledge was unmatched, and his willingness to share that knowledge set him apart. He played a pivotal role in shaping this community, even founding the Greybeards Team, a group dedicated to sharing wisdom and helping others troubleshoot their repairs. While Mayer often embraced his image as the “crusty, cantankerous old guy,” those of us who knew him best saw the heart of a generous teacher and a tireless fixer.

Mayer leaves behind thousands of contributions that continue to guide people through their repairs, reflecting his enduring legacy of empowerment and education. We are honored to have had him as part of iFixit and grateful for everything he gave to the community.
