Introduction

The Uemis Zürich was a high end dive computer in the late 2000s.

With its large, bight OLED screen and good haptic, it is still a great device.

However, the built in lithium polymer batteries may be failing after about 15 years.

    • Remove the rod holding the wrist band at the upper mounting point by pushing it in with a spiky object. Then use pliers to grab it from the other side and pull it out.

    • Pull of the wrist band from its upper mounting point. Be careful, as it consists of two plastic pieces. Be sure to keep all parts.

    • Now you can lift of the plastic cover of the battery compartment. There is a transparent foil that covers the resin. You should be able to peel it off without breaking it. It can be reused in one of the final steps.

    • The battery compartment is sealed with a resin. You need to remove the resin along with the old battery using tweezers and a fine flat-head screwdriver.

    • Cut or de-solder the wires from the battery.

    • There is a small protection circuit between the battery and the wires coming into the battery compartment. You do not need this protection circuit anymore, as the new battery comes with its own protection circuity.

    • Cut the wires of the new battery to remove the plug. Strip the insulation to access 3-5 mm of copper wire.

    • You may use a different battery than I suggest. Any lithium polymer battery with 3.7V and dimensions not exceeding about 55mm x 25mm x 10mm should do.

    • Solder the new battery's wires to the dive computer's wires. Red to red and black to black. I recommend to use shrink tubes or insulation tape for insulation.

    • You must check if the dive computer is able to start, once wiring is done.

    • After a successful check, you can now seal the battery compartment using an adequate resin. I used Raytech Magic Gel, recommended in an earlier guide by Robert Varns (posted on facebook). It is a 2-component gel used to insulate electric installations at IP68 rating and it stays quite soft and flexible when set.

    • Once the compartment is filled to the top you should place the foil on the gel and install the cover while the gel is still liquid. The cover has a curved shape and I hope that I managed to seal the compartment with minimal air inside by doing it this way.

    • It is safe to mount the wrist band once the resin is set.

    • I personally recommend to test the dive computer under well controlled conditions, such as an indoor dive pool, when using it for the first time with the new battery.

Conclusion

The battery replacement procedure is much easier than I expected, thanks to the device's well design.
