Introduction
The gearbox's counterweight cushions its forward and backward movements on the gearshift, making it active in the gearshifting system. Its original purpose was to make the movement more fluid and to cushion the gearbox. However, its purpose was also to help correctly change gears using its mass and inertia.
In its absence, changing gears can give very different feedback-- more pointed and much more rich in information. This added richness remains limited because the JE3 00x gearboxes are connected with cables.
The sensation can feel harder in certain circumstances (stronger feedback), and contrarily, more fluid and precise in other situations thanks to the reduction in mass (less inertia)
This is why some will totally hate the feeling of it without the counterweight, while others will find it very satisfying. It's just about personal preference.
***This operation is totally and easily reversible.
