Introduction

Use this guide to remove or replace the screen on your Motorola Edge 5G UW (2022).

This guide is for the official Motorola replacement part.

Before you begin, download the Rescue and Smart Assistant app to backup your device and diagnose whether your problem is software or hardware related.

Note: Follow this guide to replace a screen that's pre-installed in a new frame (a.k.a. chassis). You'll need to transplant all of your phone's internals to the new screen. If you are replacing the display panel only, follow this guide.

For your safety, discharge the battery below 25% before disassembling your phone. This reduces the risk of a dangerous thermal event if the battery is accidentally damaged during the repair. If your battery is swollen, take appropriate precautions.

You'll need replacement adhesive to complete this repair. If you bought an iFixit Fix Kit it will include extra Camera Cover Adhesive, Fingerprint Sensor Cable Adhesive, and Antenna Bracket Adhesive that are not necessary for this specific model.

Step 1

Insert a SIM eject tool, bit, or straightened paperclip into the SIM card tray hole on the bottom edge of the phone.
Press the SIM eject tool into the sim card tray hole to eject the SIM card tray.
Use your fingers or tweezers to remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2

Completely power off your phone before you begin.
Heat an iOpener and apply it to the back cover's left edge for two minutes.
A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may also be used, but be careful not to overheat the phone—the back cover and internal battery are both susceptible to heat damage.

Step 3

Apply a suction cup to the back of the phone, as close to the bottom left corner as possible.
Pull up on the suction cup with a strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and the midframe on the left edge.
Depending on the age of your phone, this may be difficult. If you're having trouble, apply more heat to the edge and try again.
Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Step 4

Slide the pick along the left edge of the phone to slice the adhesive securing the back cover to the frame.
Leave the pick inserted in the top left corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 5

Apply a heated iOpener to the back cover's top edge for two minutes.

Step 6

Rotate the pick around the top left corner to slice the adhesive.

Step 7

Slide the pick along the top edge to slice the adhesive.
Leave the opening pick inserted in the top right corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 8

Apply a heated iOpener to the back cover's right edge for two minutes.

Step 9

Rotate the pick around the top right corner to slice the adhesive.

Step 10

Slide the pick along the right edge to slice the adhesive.
Leave the pick inserted in the bottom right corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 11

Apply a heated iOpener to the back cover's bottom edge for two minutes.

Step 12

Rotate the pick around the bottom right corner to slice the adhesive.

Step 13

Slide the pick along the bottom edge to slice the adhesive.

Step 14

There's a significant amount of adhesive to the right of the cameras that secures the back cover to the motherboard cover.
Apply a heated iOpener to the right of the cameras for two minutes.

Step 15

Insert an opening pick between the back cover and motherboard cover on the top right edge.
Gently pull up on the back cover while sliding the opening pick back and forth along the right side of the cameras to slice the adhesive.
The back cover should detach from the phone at this point.

Does anyone know if the clear lens over the 3 camera lenses is part of the COVER?

Hi! The 3 camera lens covers are part of the motherboard cover, which you can see being removed here.

Step 16

Lift the back cover from the phone and remove it.
If the back cover is still stuck to the midframe, slide an opening pick around the edges of the phone until the cover separates completely.
During reassembly:
This is a good point to test your phone's functionality before sealing it up. Use this guide to run a hardware test. Be sure to power your phone back down completely before you continue working.
Follow this guide to replace the back cover adhesive.

Step 17

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the 13 4 mm screws securing the motherboard cover.

Step 18

Insert a spudger between the motherboard cover and midframe on the top right edge of the phone.
Pry up with the spudger to release the clips securing the motherboard cover.
During reassembly, press down around the perimeter of the motherboard cover to engage the clips.

Step 19

Gently pull the motherboard cover up and away from the phone and remove it.
Don't pull quickly or forcefully, as the heat spreader very loosely secures the motherboard cover to the battery.

Step 20

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the battery's press connector.
To re-attach press connectors like this one, carefully align and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side. Don't press down on the middle. If the connector is misaligned, the pins can bend, causing permanent damage.

Step 21

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the six 4 mm screws that secure the daughterboard cover.

Step 22

Use your fingers or tweezers to lift the daughterboard cover up and towards the top edge of the phone to remove it.
Be gentle when lifting, as a small heat spreader loosely connects the daughterboard cover to the battery.

Step 23

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the interconnect cable's press connector from the daughterboard.

Step 24

Take care not to puncture the battery with your tweezers—a punctured battery may leak dangerous chemicals or cause a fire.
Use tweezers to grip the top and bottom of the white antenna's coaxial connector, as close to the connector head as possible.
Lift straight up to disconnect the cable.
Be gentle when disconnecting the cable, as it's very easy to tear the socket from the daughterboard.
To re-attach coaxial connectors like this one, hold the connectors in place and gently press them straight down with your finger or the pointed end of a spudger.

Step 25

Use tweezers or your fingers to gently pull the white antenna cable up and towards the right edge of the phone until it's freed from the clip securing it to the daughterboard.
During reassembly, make sure to put the cable back in its clip on the daughterboard.

Step 26

Use the same technique to disconnect and loosen the blue and black antenna cables.
During reassembly, make sure to put the cables back in their clips on the daughterboard.

Step 27

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the 3 mm screw securing the daughterboard.

Step 28

Before you perform this step, be sure you’ve ejected the SIM tray.
Use your fingers or tweezers to pull the daughterboard up and towards the top edge to remove it.
During reassembly, make sure that all of the cables that connect to the daughterboard (interconnect and antennas) are out of they way so they don't get stuck under the daughterboard when it's reinserted.

Step 29

Apply a few drops of high-concentration (90% or higher) isopropyl alcohol under the vibration motor and its contact pad to loosen the adhesive securing them.
Let the isopropyl alcohol soak for one minute.

Step 30

Insert the pointed end of a spudger in the gap between the vibration motor and frame.
Pry up with the spudger to dislodge the vibration motor.
The vibration motor's flex cable is very fragile. Work slowly to prevent tearing the cable.
Use tweezers or your fingers to remove the vibration motor.
If there's any alcohol remaining, use a lint-free cloth to wipe it up or allow the alcohol to dry off before installing a new vibration motor.
Apply new adhesive to your vibration motor before installing it in the frame.

Step 31

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the display's press connector.

Step 32

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the 5G mmWave antenna's press connector.

Step 33

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the interconnect cable's press connector from the motherboard.

Step 34

Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the button assembly cable's press connector.

Step 35

Take care not to puncture the battery with your tweezers—a punctured battery may leak dangerous chemicals or cause a fire.
Use tweezers to grip the top and bottom of the blue antenna's coaxial connector, as close to the connector head as possible.
Lift straight up to disconnect the cable.
Be gentle when disconnecting the cable, as it's very easy to tear the socket from the motherboard.
During reassembly, make sure to put the cable back in its clip on the motherboard.
To re-attach coaxial connectors like this one hold the connectors in place and gently press them straight down with your finger or the pointed end of a spudger.

Step 36

Use the same method from the previous antenna cable to disconnect the white and black antenna cables.
During reassembly, make sure to put the cables back in their clips on the motherboard.

Step 37

Use the pointed end of a spudger to bend the 5G mmWave antenna cable out of the way to access the screw securing the motherboard.

Step 38

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the 3 mm screw securing the motherboard.

Step 39

Insert the pointed end of a spudger between the midframe and motherboard in the opening near the coaxial connectors.
Gently pry up with the spudger to release the motherboard from the midframe.

Step 40

Remove the motherboard from the phone.
During reassembly, make sure that all of the cables that connect to the motherboard (interconnect, battery, antennas, display, and button assembly) are out of they way so they don't get stuck under the motherboard when it's reinserted.

Step 41

Clean off the old thermal paste from the midframe and motherboard using isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth. Apply new thermal paste before reassembly.

Step 42

Note the orientation of the earpiece speaker. During reassembly it must be reinserted the same way or the speaker won't work.
Insert the pointed end of a spudger between the earpiece speaker and its housing
Pry up with the spudger to dislodge the speaker.
A small amount of adhesive secures the speaker.
Use your fingers or tweezers to remove the speaker.
Before reinstalling the speaker on the new screen assembly, ensure that the speaker has no mesh on the back of it.
Before reinserting the speaker, ensure that the raised ends of the speaker's contacts are on the right. If they aren't the speaker won't work.

Step 43

Apply a few drops of high-concentration (90% or higher) isopropyl alcohol under the 5G mmWave antenna.
Wait one minute for the isopropyl alcohol to penetrate the adhesive.

Step 44

Insert the pointed end of a spudger under the 5G mmWave antenna on the side closest to the center of the phone.
Pry up with the spudger to detach the antenna.
It may take significant force to detach the antenna. If the antenna isn't moving, apply a few more drops of isopropyl alcohol and try again.
Remove the antenna.
During reassembly, remove the old adhesive from the bracket and frame, then apply new adhesive.

Step 45

Pull the black, white, and blue antenna cables up and out of the phone.
During reassembly, be sure to put the antennas back in their groove on the right edge of the frame.

Step 46

Apply a few drops of high-concentration (90% or higher) isopropyl alcohol to the gaps along the battery's edges.
Tilt the device as you apply alcohol to help it flow under the battery.
Wait one minute to allow the isopropyl alcohol to penetrate the adhesive.
Only apply a few drops initially and apply more as necessary.

Step 47

Take care not to puncture or bend the battery during the removal process—a punctured or bent battery may leak dangerous chemicals or cause a fire.
Apply a suction cup to the battery.
Pull up on the suction cup with strong, steady force to separate the battery from the frame.
If the battery doesn't budge, apply a few more drops of isopropyl alcohol, wait one minute, and try again.
Insert an opening pick into the gap.
Continue to pull up on the suction cup with a strong, steady force while sliding the opening pick back and forth to slice the adhesive.
Continue this process until the battery separates from the midframe.

Step 48

Remove the battery from the midframe.
Don't reuse the battery if it has been deformed or damaged, as doing so is a potential safety hazard. Replace it with a new battery.
Follow this guide to replace the battery adhesive.

Step 49

Use your fingers to peel the board ribbon cable from the midframe.
If you're having trouble separating the adhesive, use an iOpener or hair dryer to heat the cable.

Step 50

This step shows how to replace the conductive adhesive for the board cable during reassembly. If your frame has this adhesive preinstalled, skip this step.
If necessary, cut the adhesive blocks to fit into contours of the cable channel. The adhesive doesn't need fit the contours perfectly.
Peel the adhesive blocks from the adhesive sheet.
Place the adhesives in the board cable channel. Space them evenly through the channel.
Peel any remaining plastic liners to expose the adhesive.

Step 51

You are now left with the screen assembly.

Step 52

If you're reusing your old battery, skip this step.
Use tweezers or your fingers to remove the foam strip from the battery's bottom edge.
Before installing your new battery, apply the foam strip to it.

Conclusion

Compare your new replacement part to the original part—be sure to transfer remaining components and remove adhesive backings from the new part before installing.

To reassemble your device, follow the instructions in reverse order.

Take your e-waste to an R2 or e-Stewards certified recycler.

Thanks for the guide! I wouldn't know what to do without it! I was able to successfully replace my screen which i cracked after dropping it on gravel.

My critique/advice to other users is that there are a lot of steps you don't actually need to do to replace your screen. to replace your screen all you really need is access to the cable under your battery so you can unplug it and put in the new screen, so it seems unnecessary to entirely remove the mother and daugterboards and the gray ribbon cable.

Hi Max! I'm so glad you were able to replace your screen! As the introduction states, this guide specifically is for replacing a screen that's pre‑installed on a frame. That requires transferring all the components to the new frame, which is why there are those steps for removing the boards, cables, etc.
