Introduction

Need to replace or swap the SSD in your Surface Pro 8? Here's how!

    • Power down the Surface device fully before doing anything.

    • With the screen face down, move the kickstand as far back as it will go.

    • Look for the access cover, to the left of the Microsoft logo.

    • Use a SIM Tool to push in the pin. The cover will pop up, and then you can remove it.

    • Use a T3 Torx screwdriver and carefully remove the screw (highlighted in blue) holding the SSD into place. Put it somewhere safe for reuse.

    • Magnetic bits are your friend for this!

    This is NOT T4 but T3! At least for my SP8... MS says it's Torx Plus 3IP:

    • Once the screw is out, remove the SSD by gently pulling on it.

    • Do not push up on the SSD. This can cause the connector to break.

    Problem is that there are many accusations that after upgrading the SSD the SP8 runs into crashing problems. Its happening to me as well.

    I personally haven't had this issue, but I don't doubt it happens. Have you tried reinstalling windows with a Surface ISO?

    Hey! I recommend Crucial or Micron if that's available in your region. Micron is used for OEM in the surface lineup if I remember correctly. Hope this helps.

Conclusion

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

If the device does not power on after swapping the SSD, simply plug it in and turn it on.

Note that (if you plan on reusing the SSD) all Surface devices have BitLocker turned on by default. If you want to remove BitLocker, click here.

Also, reinstalling Windows will be different as specific drivers are needed for the detachable keyboard and the touch screen. To make a Windows install for any Surface device, click here. You will need a flash drive of more than 16GB in size.

The screw and required driver are NOT T4 but Torx Plus 3IP (Torx 3 will do the job) according to the MS Service Manual (856727 Microsoft Surface Surface Pro 8 Service Guide - linked at the product page here at ifixit.

If your Screw Strips, like the one of my GF did, you will need a M 1.2 x 2 Screw and a washer to secure the SSD again. I got mine here: https://online-schrauben.de/shop/
They aren't cheap but the fit, aren't too long and work properly, unlike the ones you get from Amazon.

The dimensions I used are:
DIN 84 ST M 1,2 x 2 (Screw)

ISO 7089 A2 200HV 1,6 (Washer)
