Step 1

Unscrew the four 6.5mm screws, using a Phillips-Head screwdriver.
Pry the two halves of the shell apart using a plastic opening tool.
Be careful, as there will be a ribbon connecting the inner workings of the controller. It will not separate into two parts just by pulling apart the shell.

When re-asembling, be careful to check that all buttons/triggers are moving correctly. They can get misaligned when prying the two shell halves apart.

This part is missing vital information on how to correctly pry the case open. In the 3rd picture you can see there is actually damaged/broken clip already. In order to open the case without damage to the plastic clips inside the controller holding the plastics together you need to insert thin piece of metal between the trigger buttons on each side and push the clip outwards before trying to separate the parts, and if done correctly there is no force needed to pry open the controller. There is actually no necessary need for the clips, but if you want to keep your controller in mint condition without voiding the warranty, take care not to break these clips.

And two more tiny clips to the left and right of the headphone & EXT port. They’re VERY delicate, reckless prying WILL break at least ONE of these.

Pull the ribbon cable out of the motherboard port to fully separate the two halves, using a pair of tweezers.

If you just want to change the battery, this step is not necessary; it can be done without disconnecting the ribbon cable.

Step 3

Unplug the black and red wires from the power port located on the motherboard.
Remove the old battery from the controller.

Be extra careful - the power port socket pulled loose from the motherboard for me. I would suggest holding down the socket itself with one tool and gradually loosening the plug from the port.

Hey i have a question. When i plug my usb into the port the yellow color shows and that means its charging right? Because i left it overnight and i for sure know that it was yellow the whole time. But it didnt charge a single bit.

Step 4

Remove the 6.43mm screw connecting the motherboard to the inner workings of the controller, using a Phillips-Head screwdriver.

this and the last step arnt necessary you just put the battery back and connect all of it up

Step 5

Unhook the battery case from the motherboard, and pull it off.

Step 6

Pull out the second ribbon cable to separate the inner workings from the top of the outer shell.

Step 7

Remove the rubber pads that secure the buttons in place for the arrow buttons, shape buttons, and Playstation Home button.
Do not turn the front shell cover upside down after completing this step, because some of the buttons may fall out.

Step 8

Remove the old buttons, and replace them with new ones using a pair of tweezers.

Conclusion

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

Can’t see an updated guide, and this one worked perfectly fine. Used to replace the buttons on a knock-off DualShock 4 from AliExpress. Construction was largely the same, only devoid of a screw anchoring the battery cradle. Would argue this was an extremely easy repair!
