Introduction

This guide will provide a detailed step-by-step instructions on how to replace the planetary assembly for the KitchenAid Commercial 8qt Mixer.

    • Before starting ANY repair/disassembly of the mixer, make sure it is fully unplugged from the electrical outlet.

    • If this mixer is being used in a commercial environment, a LOTO tag can be affixed via the hole on one of the prongs on the mains plug to prevent accidental activation.

    • Place a couple dish towels or other soft materials on the base to protect it from any potential impact.

    • Disconnect the planetary from the motor drive shaft by removing the retaining pin (circled in yellow). You can do this with a hammer and either a pin punch or a Torx T15 screwdriver. Simply hammer the punch/screwdriver on the pin until it comes out the other side.

    • If the planetary assembly doesn't fall out, you might have to give it a firm pull straight down to remove it.

    Very helpful!

Could you provide a the part number for the retaining pin? I tried "Stand Mixer Retainer Pin WP9707223" for my 8qt commercial mixer and it was much smaller diameter. Should I just buy a whole new planetary assembly?

No need to buy a whole new assembly. This pin is readily available for around $8+shipping and taxes.

The parts manuals for this model are attached to the main device page. I uploaded those a while back to ensure everyone can access them to find the part number for the parts they need. Always use these to get your part numbers to prevent unnecessary purchases.

In you case, item number 25 on page 4 of the parts manuals is the part you are looking for. Whirlpool calls this "Pin, Groove" and the part number is W10234531.

    Super Helpful!! Thanks so much.

I am trying to remove the planetary from my 8 quart mixer with no luck. I have removed the pin and even partially disassembled the transmission above (I am looking to replace both the motor and transmission). The planetary refuses to drop down. I've tried pulling it by hand, with pliers, etc and it will not budge. Any idea what is holding it in place?

Hi Beansb, I have exactly the same problem as you described. Trying for last 3 days each day Trying different ways. No luck so far. So my question is did you managed to remove it? If so how did you go about. Thank you

Conclusion

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

Take care to ensure the hole in the planetary assembly is aligned properly with the hole in the motor shaft before hammering the pin back in. Also, take care when hammering the pin back in that you don't let the punch slide off the pin and damage the planetary assembly.
