Background Information

Yellow Dog Linux was a discontinued, open-source operating system based on the Red Hat Linux Distribution. It was designed primarily for high-performance computing on multi-core processors and focused on providing high performance for POWER7 and Cell processors.

While several different distributions support the Power and Cell ISA, Yellow Dog Linux stands out for focusing on supporting Apple Macintosh computers before Apple transitioned to Intel Processors, officially supporting Apple's AirPort (Apple's implementation of IEEE 802.11b-1999), and partially supporting AirPort Extreme.

Interestingly enough, Yellow Dog Linux's development company Terra Soft Solutions held the rare title of being the only officially licensed by Apple to resell computers with Yellow Dog Linux pre-installed. After Apple transitioned to Intel processors in June 2006, Yellow Dog Linux pivoted to support the Sony PlayStation 3 and IBM pSeries platforms while retaining its longstanding support for PowerPC-based Apple hardware.

On November 11, 2008, Terra Soft Solutions was acquired by Fixstars Solutions. Yellow Dog Linux was last updated on August 6, 2012.
