Background
The Philips Respironics SleepEasy is a CPAP with an intergrated humidifier. There have been a few different models of the SleepEasy CPAP since its release in 2008, but Philips discontinued this model of CPAP in 2021 after Philips Respironics were forced to recall some models of their CPAPs due to health concerns. Philps Respironics has the company goal to maximize their innovation impact and to reach as many people in need as possible. With this goal in mind their CPAPs are available globally and not exclusive to any country or region.
This CPAP is intended to assist people with Sleep apnea. Respironics appeals to a large number of these sleep patients suffering with sleep apnea. According to Philip's official website, more than 22 million Americans have obstructive sleep apnea and there are many more that have this dangerous sleep disorder around the globe.
The Respironics SleepEasy CPAP machine cost between 500 and 1,650 dollars depending on which model of the SleepEasy was purchased and what features were included. On CPAP-Supply, a company that sells a variety of CPAPs, this model of CPAP was listed at a retail price of 1,169 and the official price that it was being sold for by CPAP-supply was 803 dollars.
The SleepEasy was discontinued along with the recall of several of Philip Respironics' models of CPAPs due to health concerns. This recall has been a big topic surrounding the Philips brand that has been features in the news and on social media. This recall began in middle of 2021 and led the Philips brand to pause all sales of their CPAP machines. The recall was over health concerns that the foam used in these medical devices was thought to contain toxic gases that were going back into user's airways. The U.S. News and World Report said that the recall affected around 15 million of the devices manufactured beginning in 2006 and they expect around 5 million more were still in use by the time of the major recall in 2021.
Reviews of the Philip's Respironics SleepEasy were positive. Users discussed how the SleepEasy maintained its quality for many years after they had purchased it. One reviewer on CPAP-Supply discussed how they had to replace the water chamber due to some buildup that could not be removed with the use of vinegar. This review noted that they used water bottles rather than distilled water, so some of the buildup could be contributed to this fact.
The Philips Respironics SleepEasy CPAP was introduced as a more compact and easier to use model than the ones that proceeded it. It includes control buttons that make it easier to setup and is weighs around 3.5 pounds making it more lightweight even with the included humidifier. After this model the Dream Station model was introduced that had an even more compact design and more advanced technologies than the SleepEasy.
