Background Information

NixOS is an open source linux distribution, that is built on the Nix language, and features the Nix package managment system. Nix origonally started in 2003 as a research project led by Eelco Dolstra, which later developed into his Ph.D thesis, The Purely Functional Software Deployment Model.

Dolstra's research was supervised by Eelco Visser at Utrecht University, who laid the theoretical groundwork for Nix. However, it wasn't until 2006 that NixOS was introduced as a thesis by Armiji Hemel, which applied the Nix language in a Linux distribution.
