Background Information

Released on July 23, 1998, under the name Mandrake, Mandriva Linux was a French Linux distribution based on the Red Hat Linux distribution.

The operating system was created to provide new Linux users with a quality user experience without requiring extensive technical knowledge, or command-line expertise by integrating the best graphical environments used in other Linux Distributions.

Mandriva was widely considered to be one of the easiest-to-install and user-friendly Linux distributions. Mandriva was praised for being a distribution that could be used without requiring the need to dual-boot into Windows for compatibility with websites or software that was unavailable under Linux.

Mandriva Linux's last update was released on August 28, 2011 following layoffs of most of Mandriva's development team. The remaining development team later formed to create OpenMandriva, which acts as a direct successor to Mandriva.
