Background and Identification

The Aura HD (model N204B) is a 6.8" e-reader device with an E Ink Pearl grayscale display manufactured by Kobo, a/k/a Rakuten Kobo, a Canadian company that distributes e-books, audiobooks, and e-readers. It was available for purchase beginning on April 15, 2013, and was relatively popular with Kobo users, if only briefly, as it was generally considered overpriced relative to its competitors. The Aura HD was officially discontinued on March 6, 2015, despite accounting for 25% of Kobo's total device sales in the year following its release.

If you aren’t sure what model of Kobo e-reader you have, you can use this guide from Kobo support. Though manufacturing of the device halted when it was discontinued by Kobo, they still maintain support pages for the device as of 2024, including the most recent user guide. It has a high-resolution, front-lit LED screen with low glare to make the e-reader look more like actual paper and reduce eye strain, making it easier to use over longer periods. It gained positive reviews from critics like Expert Reviews, despite being slightly thicker and having a price ~US$30 higher than its main competitor, the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (1st and 2nd gens.).

Note:

The name Kobo is a rearrangement of the letters in the word ‘book.’ Kobo offers a library of over five million titles for e-reader users to choose from, including books and comics and has a loyal following among users committed to privacy and open standards, as their content is sold DRM-free and thus can be easily downloaded and transferred for use with devices from other manufacturers. Kobo e-readers compete with products like the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes and Noble Nook e-readers.
